Ottawa Valley Chapter, Scholarship Award for 2012

Heidi Melenchuk: ISACA Ottawa Valley Scholarship winner

2012 Winner Ms. Heidi Melenchuk is a 4th year University of Ottawa student currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program, Finance option. In addition to the finance option, she is pursing her Chartered Accountant designation. She completed the Management of Information Systems and Technology course with a final grade of A-. She is on the Dean's List and is a member of the University of Ottawa Beta Gamma Sigma chapter.

During her time at the University of Ottawa she has been involved in a number of extracurricular activities. She was a member of the student club Managers Without Borders and in 2011 was the Vice-President of the Virtual International Case Competition.  During the 2011-12 school year she was Director of Finance for the Telfer School of Management Student Council. She has volunteered as a 101 week guide and at the annual Telfer Golf Tournament. Heidi has completed two summers as a student at the Royal Bank of Canada and she has worked in a marker position at the University of Ottawa.

Nino Pasalic: ISACA Ottawa Valley Award winner

2012 Winner Nino Pasalic: ISACA Ottawa Valley Award winner for 2012

Mr. Nino Pasalic is an Algonquin College graduate, and is currently working as a level 3 Network Security Support Engineer for Check Point Software Technologies. He was enrolled in 5th semester of Computer Systems Technology – Security program when he received ISACA leadership award in fall 2011. During his studies at Algonquin College Nino has been assigned the role as a Student representative for School Academic Council (SAC), and has worked as a tutor helping other students achieving higher academic results. His GPA at Algonquin after completing 6 semesters was 3.98/4.00 (final grad A+).

Nino is pursuing further studies to obtain Security and Information Assurance – Information and Computer Security Bachelor’s degree while working full time at his current position.

Ottawa Valley Chapter, Scholarship Award for 2011

Simon Couvrette: ISACA Ottawa Valley Scholarship winner

2011 WinnerMr. Simon Couvrette is a 4th year student at the University of Ottawa. He is enrolled in the Bachelor of Commerce program, option in Accounting, and maintains an overall average of 9.0. During the Fall 2010 semester, he successfully completed the Accounting Information Systems Auditing course with a final grade of A-.

Simon has previously held student positions at the Canada Revenue Agency, the Office of the Auditor General and Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton LLP, where he performed various auditing and accounting functions. During his time at the OAG, Simon worked on the audit of Aging Information Technology Systems, which was tabled in the House of Commons in the spring of 2010. He will be working for Deloitte & Touche upon the completion of his studies.

Simon has been actively involved in the student community, where he previously served as the co-President of the University of Ottawa Accounting Club. He has also participated in several academic competitions, including the Jeux du Commerce 2011, where his team finished 3rd in taxation.

Ottawa Valley Chapter, Scholarship Award for 2010

Danielle Bergeron-Walsh: ISACA Ottawa Valley Scholarship winner

2010 WinnerMs. Bergeron-Walsh is a fourth year University of Ottawa student pursuing her Bachelors of Commerce with a specialization in Accounting. During the Fall semester in 2009, she completed the Management of Information Systems and Technology course successfully with a final grade of A+ and the Accounting Information Systems Auditing course achieving a final grade of A. In 2010, she was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma chapter at the University of Ottawa for holding an average of over 8.5 after six semesters of studies and has been a member of the Golden Key International Society since her first year of university.

Throughout her years at the University of Ottawa, Ms. Bergeron-Walsh has been involved in many extracurricular activities revolving around the school community and her own. In 2008, she was on the University of Ottawa executive committee for the 2009 Commerce Games (Jeux du Commerce) where they achieved 1st place overall. Following that, she became VP Finance for the Telfer School of Management Student Council. She has also volunteered on three occasions as a 101 week guide for the Telfer School of Management and has also for three consecutive years volunteered at the annual Telfer Golf Tournament. She has also been involved in CASCO (Commerce and Administration Student Charity Organization) and participated in many club events. Danielle is currently completing her second work-term at Deloitte & Touche as an auditor and is a teaching assistant in financial accounting. When she is not at work, Danielle also finds time to get involved with her Lake Association near her cottage where she helps promote environmentally friendly ways to live at a cottage and to help save the surrounding lakes.

Ottawa Valley Chapter, Scholarship Award for 2009

Mohammad Saymeh: ISACA Ottawa Valley Scholarship winner

2009 WinnerThe 2009 recipient of our annual scholarship Is Mr. Mohammad Saymeh. Mr. Saymeh is a fourth year University of Ottawa student in the Bachelor of Commerce program, option in Accounting. During 2008, he completed the Management of Information Systems and Technology course successfully, achieving a final grade of A.

In addition to his academics, Mr. Saymeh has been involved with his community in a variety of different ways including volunteering to file tax returns for seniors and low income individuals within the community, tutoring Canadian newcomers and assisting them with their adjustment to life in Canada at Algonquin College, and also helping out with local events in Ottawa, such as the Ottawa Bluesfest festival. He hopes to continue on with those initiatives, as well as become involved with other new and exciting opportunities (including this year’s Ottawa’s Tulip festival) in the future. Mohammad currently works with the Federal Government at the Department of Finance Canada.

Ottawa Valley Chapter, Scholarship Award for 2008

James Brooks: ISACA Ottawa Valley Scholarship winner

2008 WinnerThis year’s recipient of our annual scholarship award is Mr. James Brooks. James is a fourth year student in the Bachelor of Commerce program, with an overall average of 9.2 (A+). He has successfully completed both "Computing Concepts for Business" and "Management of Information Systems and Technology" with a final grade of A+.

Throughout the past four years, James has been involved in numerous extracurricular activities including the delivery of programs to University residents in the Ronald McDonald House Club. Last year, through the CRA Community Volunteer Income Tax Preparation program, he volunteered to prepare over 200 tax returns for low-income individuals and families. This year, James serves as Vice President External for the University of Ottawa Accounting Club. Aside from his involvements with the University, James worked at Raymond Chabot Grant Thornton as an Auditor.

Ottawa Valley Chapter, Scholarship Award for 2007

Qiu Tong: Excellence, contribution and involvement

2007 WinnerIn what continues to be a tradition of excellence, the Chapter Board is proud to announce that Miss Qiu Tong is the 2007 recipient of our annual scholarship award. Miss Tong is a third year student in the University of Ottawa's Bachelor of Commerce program, option in accounting. During the winter 2006 semester, she successfully completed the course of Management of Information Systems and Technology with a final grade of A+.

Qiu has also made many contributions to the University of Ottawa and the community, volunteering in a number of fund raising events. This year, Qiu was the Vice President Logistics for the Commerce and Administration Student Charity Organization (CASCO). Throughout the past three years, Qiu has also been the Sponsorship Director for the Environmental Law Students Association and the 8th Annual “Excellence in Leadership and a Legacy of Entrepreneurship” (ELLE) Wine and Cheese Chair for the Entrepreneurs’ Club. Aside from her involvements with the University, Qiu works at Canada Post and CIBC. Qiu also holds an Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music (A.R.C.T) diploma in piano performance, where she currently enjoys teaching piano and theory to six of her students.

Ottawa Valley Chapter, Scholarship Award for 2006

Academic achievement + Community involvement = Chapter Scholarship!

2006 WinnerThis year’s recipient of our annual scholarship award is Mr. Abdillahi Roble. Abdillahi is a fourth year student in the Bachelor of Commerce program at the University of Ottawa, option in Accounting, with an overall grade point average (GPA) of 8.3 (A). During the fall 2005 semester, he successfully completed the EDP Auditing course, with a final grade of A-. He is a member of the Golden Key International Honors Society of the University of Ottawa, a society that awards membership on an invitation-only basis to second, third, and fourth year students who have a GPA in the top 15% in their faculty.

In addition to his scholastic achievements, Mr Roble has made some contributions to his community. With his newly acquired knowledge of Canadian income tax, he volunteered to prepare income tax returns on behalf of members of his community. Next year, Mr. Roble plans to broaden the scope of these services to include more people. Mr Roble will also be volunteering for several events in the University community, namely, Car Wash day, the Summer BBQ and Terry Fox day.

Ottawa Valley Chapter, Scholarship Award for 2005

The reason she's smiling...? This lady's a winner

2005 WinnerThe Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the recipient of the 2005 ISACA Ottawa-Valley Chapter's annual scholarship award is Ms. Melanie Alletson. Melanie is a fourth year student in the Bachelor of Commerce program, option in Human Resources and Marketing, at the School of Management of the University of Ottawa. During the Winter 2004 semester, she successfully completed the Management of Information Systems and Technology course with a final grade of A -. Melanie has made many contributions to the community, such as being a student leader of the youth group of Greenbelt Baptist Church, a volunteer for the Graphit Bible Camp and the National Capital Race Weekend, a fundraiser for the Colonel By Secondary high school. Melanie was formally congratulated on her scholarship award at the Chapter's Annual General meeting on June 2, 2005.

Ottawa Valley Chapter, Scholarship Award for 2001, 2002 and 2003

2004: The Scholarship program was in hiatus during Board review. No award was presented.

2003: Chapter Scholarship goes to Melinda Cesario, a 3rd year student in the Bachelor of Commerce, Honours Accounting (Co-operative) program at the School of Management, with exceptional marks and community involvement. 2002: This year was the second of three of an obligation taken on by the Chapter to award a $1000 scholarship to a qualifying student in the MIS Program. This year’s recipient is Paul Faya, a fourth year student at the University of Ottawa. Source: Annual Report to Members, June 2003
